Coping With the Stress of Losing Your Job

In today's economy the last thing you need to do is to lose your job. However, if you do find yourself in that stressful situation it's normal to feel depressed, anxious, stressed and overwhelmed by it all. However, you need to remember that it is important that you try to figure out a way in which you can keep your cool so that you and your family can all cope with the situation better. You also need to figure out a way in which you can keep your spirits up along with figuring out how to find a new job and take care of the finances all at the same time.

One of the most important things that you can do for both you and your family is to allow yourself to feel whatever it is you feel and let the feelings arise freely right after you lose your job. A great way of expressing how you feel about the situation is to write down exactly how you feel and then share these feelings with your family. This is going to help them understand how you feel and they will be better able to help support you in this matter.

You also need to allow your family some time to adjust and then discuss with you their feelings and concerns about you losing your job. It is important that you let them feel like it's OK for them to express their feelings just like you.

You will also need to start updating all of your business contact information with new information. You don't need to include a bunch of detail about your job loss especially if you happened to have been fired or had some sort of conflict with the management that caused you to lose your job. Just provide them with a new phone number or email address and let them know you can't be contacted by your old information. If you deal with clients, this is going to be very important.

Make sure that you do your best to eat as nutritious of a diet that you can and get some sort of exercise on a daily basis and don't forget to continue to strive to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. Even if you aren't working, your body still needs it's rest so that your body is more relaxed and rested and has high energy levels to face each day.

You will need to get in touch with the unemployment office in your area and go ahead and apply for unemployment benefits. Even if you may think that you don't qualify, you will never know if you don't make an effort and go ahead and apply for it.

You should still act like you are working by scheduling your daily tasks and activities. If you continue to plan your day you are going to be able to maximize the time you spend looking for work and minimize the amount of time you let yourself worry about what you need to do next. Make sure that you set aside special times to search job listings, research different companies that are hiring, update your resume and make follow up calls to those you dropped off your resume and application at.

Sit down with your family and come up with a plan for while you are unemployed. You will need to write down all of the different money sources you have coming in and even include any money you have in the bank. You should also consider listing any items that you might need to sell and any people that you might be able to borrow money from if needed. After you have done that you need to write all of your expenses down so that you can figure out what services you can live without during this time and look for other ways in which you can trim off some money from the monthly budget.

As much as this may be a bad thing, you may need to use credit cards in order to keep as much cash as you can on hand and temporarily pay just the minimum amount each month. Once you have a job though you are going to have to take care of those cards and pay them off or you'll never get out of debt.

You also should call your utility companies and any lenders you have and see if there isn't some way that they could temporarily lower the payments until you get a job. You also should look into getting some sort of emergency assistance like help paying your utility bills or even seeing if you will qualify for food stamps.

Note: You don't have to do this alone, there are agencies out there waiting to help, you just need to contact them to see what they have to offer.
