Being ill and sick is a major dilemma in our society. It entails a lot of expense and loss of work and family time. When we feel frustrated and angry and we cannot release the energy from our system, then we are at risk of developing stress related illnesses.

Our body is designed to release chemicals that help us find more energy to use in stressful situation, like adrenaline, which gives us a momentary boost of strength. However, if these chemicals are not put to use, it may result in stress-related illnesses and the most affected parts of the body is our cardiovascular system and our heart.

As we go about our normal daily life routines we never give a thought to how stress affects our bodies. Medical studies have now found a direct link between stress and acquiring or developing diseases. Some research says that around 50% of hospital visits may have a direct link to stress.

Although we are living longer thanks to the development of our modern medicines, we are not living healthier as we face more stressful situations compared to previous generations when medicine and society were still in their virtual infancy. In those early days, people did not really have to work to deadlines and the like but they worked in their own time and based on their needs, and they mostly did not work overtime.

As we advance to a newer, bolder, and more developed society, expectations are increased thus work today is more stressful. Being unable to meet simple deadlines causes a lot of strain and pressure, increasing much more if we are over-loaded with work. This means we usually need to work overtime, depriving ourselves of sleep, exercise and family time, and we probably resort to eating fast food meals to save time when we finally get home overtired and stressed.

These kinds of habits make us more susceptible to diseases by virtue of unbalanced nutrition which makes our immune system weak. We go into overdrive, possibly drink energy boosters, just to keep ourselves going. However, depriving our bodies of much needed rest, sleep and correct nutrition makes us weaker, and an easy target for sickness and disease.

Most people never give a thought to the consequences of what they are doing to their bodies. They only realize their mistakes when they are already ill and dying. Although trying hard to get ahead in life is good, depriving yourself of your bodily needs is catastrophic to you and your health. Take care of yourself, rest from time to time and take a break or a vacation. You will see the benefits in no time at all.
